Overview

We all recognize how important the college years are. And we wonder whether our church is serving college students as well as we could. And we’re not just thinking about students at nearby schools, but also those “home-grown” students who grew up in our youth group – even if they go to school far away.

What can we do? What should we do?

I can help you figure that out – whether you’re just getting started or have an established college ministry that wants to take the next steps to impact better.

The truth is, reaching college students is really tricky for churches across the country. I’ve had the chance to examine hundreds of them, and I’ve seen them struggle to produce developed, long-lasting collegiate endeavors in churches.

I’ve also watched churches try, time and time again, with methods that don’t work all that well. Some try to “start slow and see what happens.” Others take a big, “if we build it, they will come” mentality. But many of these well-meaning methods have one thing in common:

Churches try to “get moving” with their college ministry…
before discerning their individual, best strategy for impacting students.

Meanwhile, even churches with established college ministries may be wondering if they have the best strategy in place to accomplish this vital task over the next few years – and the next few decades!

The key is developing a College Student Plan for each church, whether or not that means a full-fledged, classic “College Ministry.”

There are lots more options than most churches realize. I’m not interested in helping every church build the same sort of college ministry; I want to help churches figure out what they can do – whether a church feels like it can do a lot, can only do a little, or might fit somewhere in between.

Every church should have a plan for the students it encounters – and every College Student Plan should be unique to that church.
